Investigation of MacugenŽ Treatment on Vision Under Low Luminance in Age-related Macular Degeneration

Funding Agency: Pfizer
Project Identifier: None
Principal Investigator: Cynthia Owsley, PhD, MSPH

The goal of this project is to evaluate whether MacugenŽ improves vision under low light levels in age-related macular degeneration (AMD). MacugenŽ has been shown to preserve and improve visual acuity. Although visual acuity is very important to activities of daily living such as reading, other aspects of visual function are also critical and have been accepted by FDA as visual outcomes. A clinical hallmark of AMD is a deterioration of vision under dim illumination. Patients often complain of a central scotoma under dim illumination and difficulties adapting to low light levels. These complaints are reflected in problems in night driving and ambulatory mobility and reading difficulties in dimly lit environments. Poor night vision has been linked to an increased risk of injury due to falls at night and driving cessation.
