On January 1, 2004 a new law went into effect in the State of Florida that requires drivers age 80 and older to undergo a visual acuity re-screening when applying for their next license renewal. The advent of this law provides a valuable opportunity to examine the impact of the vision re-screening “intervention” on the safety of older drivers in this age group, in a fashion that avoids the methodological limitations of ecologic studies. In addition, several important questions about the process can be addressed, including but limited to whether there is a reduction of drivers >= 80 years who seek renewal, the number and the characteristics of those who fail screening, the driving habits of drivers in this age group, and whether screen-failures seek eye care.
