Training Opportunities

Ophthalmology Resident Research Opportunities
Residents in Ophthalmology at UAB who are interested in doing a research project in patient-oriented research with the CRU faculty should contact one of us directly (see Directory) or e-mail us at CRU@uab.edu. We can accommodate residents in any year of their residency program. Ophthalmology residents are required to carry out research projects each year, which they then deliver as presentations at the Department’s annual resident research/alumni day in the Spring. Residents interested in Fellowship Training in a subspecialty following the residency are particularly encouraged to become significantly involved in a research project.

Medical Student Research Opportunities

Students in the UAB School of Medicine who are interested in becoming involved in research projects in ophthalmology should contact one of the CRU faculty or e-mail us at CRU@uab.edu. This is particularly recommended for medical students who are contemplating an ophthalmology residency or already have selected this career path. The summer is an excellent time to get involved in research, although arrangements can be made for other times of the year as well. In some cases research training stipends for the summer are available. For more information about how to apply for these stipends, contact Flora Gathof in Dr David Briles’s office at flora_gathof@microbio.uab.edu or phone (205) 934-1924.

Optometry Student Research Opportunities
Students in the UAB School of Optometry who are interested in research training in vision science with CRU faculty can learn more at their web site OD/MS and OD/PhD graduate programs in vision science or Dr. Kent Keyser’s office at rhart@uab.edu or phone (205) 934-6743. Research training stipends are also available through this program.

Graduate Student Opportunities
The CRU faculty serve as faculty members in a number of graduate programs at UAB and serve as graduate student research mentors in these programs. For more information about these programs, please visit their web sites listed below, or alternatively, contact the CRU faculty member directly. In some of these programs there are training grant stipends for U.S. citizens and permanent residents.
