statistics

13% of all traffic fatalities involve an older person.

Each year, traffic crashes kill or injure approximately 450,000 Americans ages 55 and older.

Older drivers are twice as likely to have vehicle crashes for every hundred thousand miles they drive compared to younger drivers.

Motor vehicle collision is the second leading cause of death due to injury in those ages 55 and older.

You may be someone or have a family member who has medical problems or visual, cognitive, or physical impairments that affect their driving ability. Now there is a clinic that can assist you in determining whether you or your family member are likely to be safe on the road.

If you are a physician or other healthcare provider, you may have patients who you suspect have difficulty because of medical problems. Patients or family members may have described incidents that prompt concerns about their safety and the safety of other drivers and pedestrians around them. Now there is a resource to assist you in making recommendations about whether they should be on the road.

The UAB Driving Assessment Clinic evaluates fitness to drive. Through years of research we have identified risk factors and developed screening tests for determining which older drivers are at high risk for crash involvement. The clinic welcomes referrals from physicians, other health care providers, concerned family members, as well as self-referrals.
