Jennifer Moren Cross

Jennifer Moren Cross was born in Corpus Christi, Texas and grew up in Austin. She earned a B.S. in Nursing, summa cum laude, from the University of Texas at Austin in 1997, and received the “Outstanding Bachelor of Science in Nursing” student award. Prior to entering graduate school, she worked as a critical care nurse and pharmaceutical sales representative in Houston. In 2002 Jennifer received an M.A. in Sociology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, concentrating in medical sociology, and won the “Outstanding Graduate Award” from the department.

In 2007, Jennifer completed her Ph.D. in Sociology at Duke University. While there, she received an NIA Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Research Training Grant (T32 AG00139) Pre-Doctoral Fellowship. Her dissertation and research concentrated on medical sociology, social epidemiology, quantitative methods, life course, and social stratification. During her graduate training, she was awarded the “Vorsanger-Smith Scholar Award” by Duke’s Department of Sociology in 2005, an annual award given to one graduate student for overall excellence.

Beginning in July of 2007, Jennifer Moren Cross began her position as a part-time Research Associate for the University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Ophthalmology’s Clinical Research Unit. She is married to Dr. James M. Cross, Director of the UAB Burn Center, and they have one child.
