A main focus of the UAB Department of Ophthalmology’s Clinical Research Unit is the study of Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) – the leading cause of blindness in our aging population. The public is largely unaware of AMD’s existence and its devastating impact on vision and the threat it poses to the enjoyment of everyday life. Because there is no cure for AMD, there is an urgent need to develop treatments for this disease, especially for its earliest phases before severe vision impairment occurs.

Eyes on Art: The Age-related Macular Degeneration Project marks the official launch of our information campaign to the public. This event, held at the Birmingham Museum of Art on April 18, 2004, featured an art exhibit of works by local artists who have AMD. A series of limited edition posters has been created to commemorate the event, as illustrated below. To find out how you can obtain these beautiful posters symbolizing our search for the cure, click here. To read about the artists, click here for our Eyes on Art program booklet.
